Molinos del río Armenteira
Meis Town Council is located in the interior of the Salnés County. Its magnificent situation and orography provide a visually rich journey from the Castrove Mountain to the several parishes of the area.
The religious architecture (churches, the Armenteira Monastery, stone crosses) is the most outstanding one in Meis. However, popular architecture is also present and the Muíños da Armenteira (mills) are a clear example of that.
The simplicity of its constructive lines and the quality of its materials attract the attention of anyone who stops to look at them.
The Muíño de A Casa is part of the Interpretation Centres of the Rede de Turismo Cultural Galaico - Portuguesa (Galician-Portuguese Cultural Tourism Net) and its surroundings are one of the preferred places for the visitors.
O Muíño da Casa is located by the Armenteira riverside taking advantage of the strength of the water current and it is a small construction and it has a square ground plan and granite walls.
Placed at a natural setting that arises the interest of the visitor, it is part of a set of mills located all along a walk of several kilometres, following the course of the river Armenteira.
Recently recovered and restored, we will be able to know how a mill works as well as each of the elements that make it work. The Muíño da Casa shows how the milling activity was in the past.
There are two possibilities as far as the work of a mill is concerned. If it belonged to several owners, the exploitation was done in turns and each of them was allowed a milling turn; if there was only one owner, he kept part of the grain they were going to mill (toll-corn exploitation).
Keeping the historic memory centred on the past ways of life and works, as well as the myths and legends, is the objective of this Interpretation Centre.
The river mills also had an important social role, as they were meeting points for the people in the surrounding villages and they commented on the daily events and gossips.
