Pazo de Sobrán

Category: Monuments   |   Zone: Val do Salnés

It was erected in the 15th century by Suero Gómez de Sotomayor, one of the most important noblemen in the county.

The remnants of the old monastery of Cálogo (11th century) in Vilanova were used in the construction of this country house. Although it is made up of a central body flanked by two towers, offering thus the typical image of a country house, there are not balconies on its façade neither cornices, neither battlements nor gargoyles, leaving the façade naked. The country house is characterized by the architectural austerity and sternness typical of the fortresses and the fort houses and it hides, at the same time, a small inner courtyard. This courtyard lights an adjacent body where we can find a suntrap resting on a row of simple columns.

The parish church, consecrated to San Martiño, is connected to the country house and it dates back to the 12th century.

Localitation: Vilaxoán, parish of San Martín de Sobrán. Vilagarcía de Arousa Council.
