Plaza de Fefiñáns
The Pazo de Fefináns, located at a semi-urban settlement, constitutes, together with the surrounding elements (square, arch-bridge, San Benito church...) a very interesting artistic and monumental collection.
The country house has a square ground plan with many doors, windows with triangular dustguards, like small pediments, Renaissance busts and balconies (three of them are rounded and have with iron rails; they look like pulpits detached to the façade and they are placed on opposite angles on the first and the second floor) facing the square.
Its big coats of arms located at the two main entrances are to be highlighted, as well as its battlement tower with coat of arms and drainpipe gargoyles and that is higher than any other part of the building. The arch-bridge with two coats of arms and endowed with a Baroque balustrade is also to be stressed. It connects the country house and the small vegetable garden with the big vegetable garden. There is also a spacious garden with valuable vegetal species, two fountains and a turret, which is a vestige of the defensive character lying at the origin of the country house.
The church is Latin-cross ground plan church is located in a wide atrium. It is crowned by two elegant Churrigueresque (Baroque) towers both of them with spiral staircase leading to the bell tower. It has a vault that is unique in Galicia because it is made up of very small stones (up to 8 cm.) and divided and escorted by four semicircular arches. A pointed entrance arch ornamented with a rich archivolt leads into the transept. The transept has a star rib vault with a coat of arms quartered in cross on its festoon. This coat of arms represents the Sarmentos, Valladares and Figueroas. There are two pointed arch chapels on each side of the transept where we can see the arcosolium. Outside, on the façade facing the square, there is a wonderful coat of arms in memory of D. Fernando de Valladares, a sun clock, coat of arms of the owners of the house, etc. The church is decorated with well-carved, elegant columns.
