Ruta de los Molinos de Barrantes
Ribadumia Town Council has a cultural heritage that dates back to the Iron-Age settlements culture, as it is the case of the interesting Castro de Besomaño Leiro in O Monte do Castro; or back to the Middle Ages, as Dona Urraca or Bispo Xelmírez, as well as the Templars, played a role on the historic stage of the county and, as an evidence of their presence, they left symbols in the churches of that age. The cross and the lamb are good examples of that.
This council has a privileged location that allows the visitor to enjoy superb landscapes and open air activities, such as rambling, canoeing or routes on bike.
This itinerary is a part of the Open Air Interpretation Centres of the Rede de Turismo Cultural Galaico - Portuguesa (Galician-Portuguese Net of Cultural Tourism) and it represents one of the preferred leisure places on the part of both the inhabitants of the council and the many visitors who come all year through.
The Ruta dos Muiños (route of the Mills) in Barrantes, recovered by council initiative, turns to be an unique walk through places full of history, landscape, native vegetation and ecosystem diversity with a rich flora and fauna. There is a path all along the riverside where the visitor will be able to see tall trees such as oaks and willows.
On the other hand, this route shows an intrinsic charm related to the fact that this fluvial area is located next to the low course of the river where the water runs gently channelled, either within masonry walls or within natural channels.
This route is formed by four water mills that line this brook flowing into the River Umia and where the visitors will have access to in order to know the way they work and their uses, which are recovered now as a cultural and tourist activity.
