The Rías Baixas Designation of Origin Wine spans over five
perfectly demarcated sub-zones which spread from the
Portuguese border to the area surrounding Santiago de
Compostela, covering with vineyards more than 3,600
hectares of the most westerly part of southern Galicia.
In Pontevedra province, we come across the sub-zones of Val
do Salnés, O Rosal, Condado de Tea and Soutomaior. Meanwhile,
the Ribeira do Ulla area covers the southern part of A
Coruña province and the northern area of Pontevedra.
What do they share...
All these areas share a great tradition in wine production
which has enabled them to be recognised for the high quality
of their wines and they have become part of the Rías Baixas
Designation of Origin. These lands have a typically Atlantic
character, which includes leafy plants and mild temperatures,
making the most of Galicia thanks to the gentle winds from
the Atlantic and the ancestral work and effort of the people
of this region. On the other hand, it seems as though wine
production also incentivises the appearance of an excellent
local cuisine, and we are not only referring to the world
famous seafood of the area, but also the vegetables, fruit,
meat, cheeses and other local produce which will delight
your taste buds.
The differences...
However, at the same time, each of these has its own
landscapes, traditions and a unique cultural reality
which provide them with their own personality. This is
why the Rías Baixas Wine Route offers different itineraries,
so visitors can appreciate and enjoy each of the nuances
of which they are comprised.
